Van tent naar huisje

Huisje

In September hadden we boompjes besteld.

World Wide Opportunity on Organic Farms) host.

From tent to cottage

Cottage
I never thought it would make so much difference to go from the tent to the chalet: That I would feel so much more comfortable, experience so much more peace !!
Obviously I hear and feel the wind much less when it’s windy. We even recently realized; "It must be windy outside…", because we heard olives fall on the roof. Quickly I went out to get the laundry, while it was almost blowing off the line.
We also do not hear the waterfall (which has "turned on" recently) in the house. The constant background noise of falling water drowned out many sounds. We don't hear the drowned out sounds, but we don't hear the waterfall either.
The cottage is small, cute, cozy and we realized that since we left the Netherlands, we have not felt as comfortable anywhere else as we feel now (in none of the houses in Ecuador or in the rental houses in Spain before this).
The gas heater heats the room with ease, the air is drier by itself (everything in the tent was damp and cold in the morning), the view is beautiful and it feels no longer "mandatory" to spend the day outside; Because it is also cozy inside. There is, of course, a danger in this; to remain inside if you can sit outside and thereby slowly sink into an old comfort zone of ours. And the first days it was really like that, I must admit; we just preferred to sit inside. But gradually this became more 'normal' and it is often very yummy outside. For example last week, when it was 18 degrees for days in succession, with a lovely sun shining.
The dog, since the construction of the extension, is free to roam at night (before this she was locked up in a kind of kennel at night, on the spot where the extension is now) and is leaning against the door to be close to us. She did the same in the tent, which caused a huge noise with every movement she made at night.
In short; on all fronts we enjoy the peace, the ease, the safer feeling. I can even MORE enjoy the land we live on, now that certain basic needs have apparently been met (which I didn't even know I had).
Now that Eric is in the Netherlands with Beer (they left last Tuesday), I am twice as grateful that this house is ready! With the storm and cold on some occasions (for example today), I would spend the night in the anxious hope that the tent will hopefully survive the night again.
What I find a strange phenomenon, is that I find it more scary then before (now that Eric is gone) that there could be creepy people at night (well, of course I mean men; I'm not afraid of creepy women), while this fear wasn't so strong when I lived in the tent. But now that I actually have a door that can be opened and closed, it suddenly becomes a fear; that a scary stranger enters the door at night. You apparently need a door for that fear?
Normally when Eric was gone, I still had Bear around to consult with, if devices broke down, the car did not start, the batteries were empty or the inverter did not want to charge the batteries. But this time Bear has gone to the Netherlands with Eric and I think that part is also more scary for me. Nikki seemed to feel this, because I got a message from her on Wednesday that they were there if I needed help with something. Quite a relief!
For those who are interested: the cottage has cost around 750 euros (in total!).

Composting processes
In the meantime I have built another new compost bin (the second one I built). We started with 2 plastic compost bins that were on sale at the time (to be able to put something down quickly when we went to live on the land). When we received visitors to the land, the bins were full unexpectedly quickly. Together with the visitors, we emptied a bin and dumped it somewhere with a black tarp to speed up the composting process, so that we could use the container again. Unfortunately, despite the tarp over it, it continued to attract flies. The other bin also continued to attract flies. We then moved the containers to the rear part of the land, next to the water tank. We also started putting earth on every load that we threw in, to combat the odor (and the flies). That worked perfectly. We buried the part from under the sail somewhere. To everyone's surprise, it turned out that the pile had actually completely composted; there was nothing left of the vegetables, the fruit, the poo or the toilet paper. Wonderful to experience. It just smelled of earth. And that within 3 months!
In September we ordered trees. We wanted to make the soil for planting it from a mixture of our compost and the "normal" earth from the land. The oldest container (4 months old) also appeared to be COMPLETELY composted. And that while we do nothing special with it. We empty the toilet buckets and fruit and vegetable waste in it, we throw some earth over it (against the smell) and that's it. I don't stir in, for the oxygen that should be able to reach it, I don't throw in any water - besides the urine that is already in the toilet buckets. I don't do anything about the things that you apparently should do. And yet everything was converted. The only thing I could find recognizable in it was half-decayed avocado seeds. It smelled quite nice of damp forest soil, I swear. Just magic. So all the happy trees we planted are growing in it now.
Mar, who helped me (because Lem would rather just die, he said), was horrified by the idea, but also had to admit that it wasn't too bad. The "idea" was the only thing that bothered her when we were emptying the bin together.
The second plastic compost bin has now also been full for around 4 months and I will probably empty it in January to make a start on the flower garden. I have decided not to start a vegetable garden in the beds that I had made in May. I'm just going to put a lot of flowers there, just for the beauty of it. Where the vegetable garden will come? No idea yet.
A large container that I made of pallets became full end of October (thanks in part to guests in the yurt), so we started using the first plastic container again, while in the meantime I made a very large, new container that still needs to be started. So I can say with joy that this proces works perfectly so far!

Cooking and eating
The kids have been seriously cooking for some time now. Mar cooks every week on Mondays and Beer and Lem alternate every other week. Mar has taken up the challenge to google and make vegan meals, to see if they are inspiring enough to use for the retreats. And she has already produced several ones we will use there! Lem and Beer make exactly what they like and remove the meat (or make an extra part without meat) for me.
In the meantime I have stopped eating purely vegan. I now eat vegetarian again. Because it would otherwise hinder this cooking process too much and I didn't want this, so I started rethinking it. For Beer and Lem, vegetarian cooking is very feasible, but vegan cooking is not, they told me.
If I looked at why I ate vegan, that was a process: I went to see what my body did and did not respond to last year. I started off with eating purely raw food last October. In March, when we were going to live on the land, I switched to vegan because I started to need warmed up food. Slowly I started to eat more different things. I know what falls badly and what is "ok" and what is even ‘good’ for my body. Still, I like things that fall wrongly or "ok-ish". Whether I stick to a certain diet or not; I keep wanting these things. And through that insight, I have gone back to how I have been eating since my 4th year of life; vegetarian. I simply have no desire for meat, otherwise I would just eat it now. So I give in to my needs again, in short.

Wwoofing
It seems that we are going to register as a Wwoof- (World Wide Opportunity on Organic Farms) host. We have an olive harvest that needs to be done, a communal kitchen that needs to be built, a vegetable garden that needs to be planted, etc. There is so much to do in the coming months that we would like to get some help with. If someone knows other options for finding help, we would love to hear from you.
